Katahdin Kennel is originally from the mid-coast region of Maine and is named after the area’s largest mountain. My family and I moved from my home state to Missouri in 2014 where we have continued raising our Belgian Tervuren companions. We currently have two females, one silver and one red/mahogany, and a black male who are treated first and foremost as family and companion dogs. I have kept our breeding program small so all dogs are raised in a healthy social environment and treated with adequate nurture and contact. All puppies are raised in the same manner and socialized from day one. We treat each one as a member of our family until he or she is ready to move on to a permanent home.
We strive for healthy, well rounded and structurally sound Tervurens. All our dogs are OFA hip/elbow certified at two years of age. Our dogs are carefully selected with clear backgrounds, sound temperaments and quality conformation. Belgians are a very versatile dog and are able to perform in a wide range or areas. Many of our puppies go on to do well in therapy work, herding, ski, bicycle and sledding activities and on and on!
Our male is a stunning, fully black Belgian, registered as a Belgian Tervuren through AKC due to his parents' status, but would be considered a Belgian Groenendael in other countries that don't separate the varieties. He has a nice, easy going personality, beautiful build, and absolutely loves our female, Akira! I was very excited to bring him home, as he is our first ever black Belgian, and adds to the variety with our silvers and reds. He is from older American lines with a nice strong build and beautiful conformation!
Our silver female, Sapphire, is out of two silver parents, but has produced a mix of red, silver, and black puppies, depending on the male she has been paired with. She is gentle and sensitive in nature to her people, but an avid guard dog with strangers and keeps a close look out for anything new in the area. She is built long, lean and very athletic. Sapphire weighs around 70 pounds.
Akira, our beautiful red female, is highly intelligent, sensitive, quick to learn and eager to follow my direction. She has a nice pedigree of “old style” Belgians with beautiful strong features, lush coats and wolf-like heads. She is incredibly sweet natured, energetic and my shadow around the house. She also can be quite the guard dog with strangers, but is gentle and loving to those she knows. Paired with Atlantis, she has produced a mixture of traditional mahogany and black pups along with all black puppies.
I fell in love with Belgian Shepherds as a teenager the first time a saw a Belgian Groenendael at a dog show. I discovered the Tervurens shortly after and loved their rich color diversity. I was able to attain my dream of owning one of the majestic dogs myself in 2009 with the purchase of our first Belgian Tervuren, Saber. I brought home our first female, Ivey, the following year and started raising these beautiful dogs a few years later. I was recently able to add our first all black Belgian to the mix with our male, Atlantis!

How do we have black Tervurens?
We often get questions about our black Belgian Tervurens, and if they differ from the Belgian Groenendael. So, here's the explanation of the black AKC Belgian Tervuren. While in other countries, the Belgian Tervuren, Groenendael, Malinois and Laekenois are seen as one breed (only differentiated by their coats), here in the US the AKC has separated the types into different breeds. So, as with any breed that is technically the same (labs with different colors for instance) the dogs will occasionally throw puppies with the other colors in a litter. In other countries a black pup born to a Tervuren would automatically be called a Groenendael, a short haired born to long haired parents, a Malinois, etc. Here, when a puppy is born to registered parents, that puppy has to be registered as the parent’s breed regardless of appearance. So, while a black Belgian puppy would be a Groenendael in other parts of the world, AKC requires the puppy to be registered as a Tervuren due to AKC registered Tervuren parents. That is how we are the only country with black Tervurens. Ultimately, they are all still the same dog, but currently have to be registered as they are until AKC decides to update the breed classifications. I hope this helps clear things up!
